The city recently completed the replacement of all residential and commercial water meters in the city. This was necessary due to aging of the old meters which led to a failure rate of close to 30 – 40%. As a result of the failure rate and installation delays many customers have received bills which have reflected average of usage for the previous 12 months. As a result of this, many of you will see changes in your water usage and resulting billing with the installation of the new meters. The meters which have been installed provide the highest level of accuracy in the industry today. The bill you receive will reflect the actual water flowing into your residence or business through the meter. Your bill may be higher or lower than your previous bills. It is recommended that you check for leaks – dripping facets or toilets which are running as these will cause your bill to be higher than necessary. Mount Vernon Land Use Plan Public Survey If using a mobile device, for an improved experience please fill out the survey in horizontal (landscape) mode. During the next few months, we will be updating the City’s Zoning and Land Use regulations and maps with a Land Use Plan. To ensure the City’s priorities are aligned with the needs of our residents, we need your input! The Land Use Plan defines the various ways properties are categorized and utilized in the city. Through the update of the Future Land Use Plan, the City is striving to keep our local charm while managing the inevitable development pressure due to being in a popular market. We believe that development decisions which abide by the needs and desires of the community will encourage smart City spending and a stable population growth while creating an environment for people to live, work, and play. The time you invest in this survey will influence decisions that will be made regarding the City’s future. Trash pick up will be on Friday for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. Trash will be picked up on Thursdays as regularly scheduled for all other weeks.

Extra, Extra... Update on Water Meter Installations: Estimated time to completion for the Water Meter Installation is approximately two months. Please be patient and mindful of the extra Utility Contractors around the City. New Office Hours: Beginning Wednesday September 04, 2024, City Hall hours of Operation will be Monday through Thursday 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, Friday 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. Happy Friday! Starting Monday, August 19, 2024, contractors will be around town installing new water meters. Staff does not yet have an estimate on how long this process will take.

The City is aware of the pothole issues at the Kaufman Street Freedom Railroad Crossing. Unfortunately, the City is not allowed to make repairs to railroad crossings or the street property adjacent to the railroad crossing. This is the responsibility of the railroad, in this instance, Freedom Rail. Railroads have jurisdiction over all crossings and do not allow cities to make repairs, due to safety concerns. The owners of Freedom Railroad have been notified of this needed repair, as well as other concerns. They have also been requested to address the repairs as rapidly as possible. We will continue to monitor the situation.

THE BOIL WATER NOTICE IS LIFTED! THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE Figure: 30 TAC §290.47(c)(3) Boil Water Notice Rescinded 1/20/2024 On January 17, 2024, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality required the City of Mount Vernon/PWs #0800001 public water system, to issue a Boil Water Notice to inform customers, individuals, or employees that due to conditions which occurred recently in the public water system, the water from this public water system was required to be boiled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes. The public water system has taken the necessary corrective actions to restore the quality of the water distributed by this public water system used for drinking water or human consumption purposes and has provided TCEQ with laboratory test results that indicate that the water no longer requires boiling prior to use as of 1/20/2024 If you have questions concerning this matter, you may contact Craig Lindholm, City Administrator at 903-537-2252 or 903-277-5728.

The boil water notice will remain in effect until we get the final results. We will post when the notice is rescinded.

Due to a laboratory error one of the five samples has not completed testing. As a result we will not receive a final report until around 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 20th. We apologize for the inconvenience. We will post as soon as the results are returned.
